Sheriff Riley Buchanan knows what to expect as he waits for his Merrick to take control. But due to a dream he had as a teen, Riley doesn’t expect it to go as well for himself as it did for his brother and sister. And he’s fighting this worry alone since he hasn’t told anyone else about his fears.
Riley and Kellan are sent to Purity, Washington in search of the next Dark Marker after Saige tracked it to that area. What Riley discovers instead is his long ago girlfriend, Hope Summers. He’d never stopped loving her, but he’d broken up with her in a very cruel manner because he needed her to stay away from him to protect her life.
Hope is furious when she sees Riley walking into her café. Yet, after her anger fades, she finds herself still drawn to him, despite the pain he’d caused her in the past. But before either one can figure out where to go from there, the danger following on Riley’s heels forces him to confide in her.
Regardless of Hope’s desire to help him, Riley refuses to put her in any more danger, and he fears he’s the greatest threat to her safety, even if she might also be his salvation. And the Casus aren’t the only thing they need to worry about as other factions seemed to have joined the fight against the Merrick.
