Susan Donovan is back on the romance scene with her new book, The Girl Most Likely To... but unfortunately, her latest book has a few too many stumbles for this reader.
Kat Cavanaugh has arrived back home to Persuasion, West Virginia, with a big splash. Only, it does not seem to impress her high school boyfriend, Riley Bohland. The only thing he wants with Kat is to know where his son is, the son Kat was pregnant with when she left town as a teenager.
Kat wants to hate Riley on sight but that is hard to do when she immediately starts sympathizing with his demands to see his son. Riley has been searching for them and he is desperate to meet his son. Kat wants revenge on Riley for dumping her when she was pregnant, but coming back to Persuasion and seeing Riley again has brought up plenty of unresolved feelings Kat has for him, for her cruel father, and for all the people who treated her badly before. But before she gives friendship with Riley a chance again, Kat bolts. Will she find the courage to make things right with Riley before she loses him from her life again?
Iíve really enjoyed Susan Donovanís contemporary romances in the past and was thus disappointed that her new release did not seem to have the same verve or depth of story as her previous romances. This book just felt off. The characters seemed rather shallow and as if they were going through the motions of love rather than truly experiencing it. Despite the big dramatic reunion Kat and Riley had, filled with fireworks and name-calling, their romance got back on track very quickly. Add in a number of subplots which included an obsessed ex-fiancťe, a drunk father, and Aidanís easy acceptance of Riley and this bookís conflicts ended up being either ridiculous or smoothed over way too quickly. Stereotypical villains only added to the rather farcical nature of the story.
I had high hopes for Susan Donovanís return to romance. Overall, I was just disappointed. I will still keep my eye on her books but this story was just so-so.
