Joy Young hasn’t had an easy life. It began with a troubled childhood full of abuse and neglect. She thought she had finally found happiness when she married her high school sweetheart - but he was tragically taken from her in an accident on their wedding day. Seven years have passed, but Joy is still tormented with nightmares of the tragedy that claimed the love of her life, Ryan.

When Joy receives a phone call in the middle of the night from her and Ryan’s best friend, Hank, she is delighted to hear his voice once again. But she is confused by Hank’s hateful manner and she is shocked to learn that the reason for his call is that her father-in-law has had a massive heart attack and is not expected to live much longer. Her father-in-law is asking for Joy, so despite the painful memories New Orleans will evoke, she decides to make the trip back home.

New Orleans holds many surprises and secrets for Joy, where she will not only have to face her fears, but also make decisions that could change the rest of her life. There is also a dangerous threat to her that is closer than she could ever suspect.

It is difficult to write a review about Legacies without giving away the twists and turns of the plot. I will say that Joy has several men in her life and that the difficulties she faced to find happiness were understandable because of her strong sense of loyalty and of right and wrong. On the other hand, the characteristics that caused Joy’s dilemmas also make her a heroine that is easy to like.

For all of the diehard romance fans, it is prudent to mention that while love is an emotion that is spoken of much throughout the novel, it is not at the forefront of the plot. Rather the decisions Joy must make and the heartbreak she faced throughout her life were highlighted, along with the mystery behind her husband’s accident. However, Legacies nonetheless had an intriguing storyline and contained just enough romance to be considered a “love story”.

Legacies is Ms. Kay’s debut novel and gives readers much to anticipate in the future from this new author. It is full of mystery and suspense, and will keep you turning the pages to see what new surprise is around the corner.
