Caine’s Reckoning is the first book in the new Hell’s Eight series. Those familiar with this author know she’s the queen of writing fresh, sensual westerns with characters that will remain with you long after the last page is turned.
Texas Ranger Caine Allen and two of his friends and partners are given the task of locating several women who have been kidnapped. Upon finding them, Caine is impressed with how one of the females stands up to her captors – big on courage, though small in stature.
For the last year Desi has gone from one terrible situation to the next, and would rather die than be returned to the town where she’s been imprisoned. Though she tries to escape, Caine proves impossible to deceive, yet honorable at the same time.
In order to protect her, Caine finds himself married to Desi, and though he can’t claim to love her, he’ll do everything in his power to protect, and avenge her. Once he has her safe on Hell’s Eight land, he faces an even bigger challenge – teaching Desi not all men take pleasure in hurting women, and that nothing is forbidden between a man and his wife.
Though Caine and Desi alone would have made this a wonderful romance, the many other men of Hell’s Eight are an integral part of the series and we are certainly left anxious for the next installment.
Rape and the repercussions experienced by Desi are an essential part of the story, however the details of the rape and Desi's first hand experience of it are only told by Desi as she remembers the event, and not as the actual rape occurred.
