Selena McCaffrey had been spending a nice relaxing day with her boyfriend Tony and his family when Tony and Selena decide it’s time to go home. They live on the same street but they’re going to Tony’s house until Tony notices a package sitting on Selena’s porch and heads over to get it and put it inside her house. Once Selena opens Tony’s door and picks up the cat, Tony picks up the package and opens Selena’s door to place it inside. Just then, the cat jumps out of Selena’s arms and races over to run into her house...and her house explodes! Luckily Tony isn’t hurt but it appears someone wants Selena dead. There can be only one psychopathic madman and they lost track of him when he escaped FBI custody!
Tony is very concerned about the woman he loves. He knows Selena and she is not the type to go into hiding but she is doing just that – at her newly-found father’s house in Alabama. While she’s there, she’d love to get to know the family that she didn’t know she had until a few months earlier! She gets to know her father better, she meets her grandmother on her father’s side, her grandfather on her late mother’s side, and her mother’s sister but which one of these people is hiding something tragic from Selena? Will the killer catch up to Selena?
While I suppose this book could be considered a stand-alone, I recommend reading the first two books in this series first. On the other hand, this book made me want to read the first two books in order to get more background information on the characters.
Scorched by Rachel Butler is a real page-turner that somehow didn’t quite satisfy.
