New York cop Mike Taylor is on his way to Trouble, Pennsylvania to try and talk his grandfather into selling the town and moving. Before he can get to his grandfather’s house, he spies a woman walking barefoot down the side of the road. Never one to resist a lady in distress, Mike pulls over to see if she needs any help.
Jennifer Feeney is in town to visit with her aunts with the hopes of getting them out of their falling down homes and into a retirement community. Unfortunately they take the news very badly and ditch her on the side of the road. When Mike offers her a ride she warily accepts and then tries to ignore how sexy he is.
With Mike’s grandfather playing matchmaker, Mike and Jennifer find themselves together several times during their weekend visit. After returning to New York Mike tracks her down. He is interested in seeing her again. But when danger seems to follow them around, Mike doesn’t know if someone is after him or after her. Jennifer has written two books which cast men in a rather negative way and has been getting threatening calls and messages. Mike has made plenty of enemies over the course of his career.
There’s also the mystery of Jennifer’s two aunts and a past murder they may or may not have been involved in. As a cold case cop, Mike can’t help but be curious while Jennifer doesn’t want anyone digging into the past.
Mike and Jennifer aren’t the only ones finding themselves exploring a new relationship. Back in Trouble an older woman finds love for the first time. And the next story in the series - Getting Into Trouble in the Heat Wave anthology will feature Allie and Damon who have been mentioned in both ”Trouble” books so far.
There are a lot of characters in this book, but if you are familiar with the series, then you are familiar with most of them already. Ms. Kelly knows how to write a love story and whether the couple is young, old, or somewhere in between, she makes it fresh and fun.
