Lord of My Heart, the first historical romance of Jo Beverley, is set in 1068, two years after the Battle of Hastings. With this magical and historical background, Ms Beverley has created a wonderful tale with two unforgettable characters.
Aimery de Gaillard is the youngest son of Guy de Gaillard, a half-English and Norman as well as the godson of the new King, William. Because of his birth, he is torn between his familial loyalties and his devotion to the King. On one hand, he fights for the King and on the other hand, he helps his uncle, Hereward, who is Saxon and a rebel.
Madeleine de la Haute Vironge is raised in a convent. After the death of her father and brother, she returns home and becomes the heiress of Baddersley, under the guidance of King William. But Baddersley falls in the hands of her uncle and aunt and the villagers are suffered from their cruel treatments.
In order to save Baddersley and the villagers, Madeleine must marry someone who is capable of maintaining and protecting Baddersley and get ride of her uncle and aunt. She writes to William and asks for help.
William brings along three suitors for Madeleine to choose but none of them seems to be suitable to be the new lord of Baddersley except Aimery, who looks like Golden Hart - the outlaw Madeleine meets at the riverside. Aimery tells Madeleine that he does not want to marry her and she makes up her mind to marry another candidate instead. With a few tricks and pressure from William, Madeleine is reluctant to choose Aimery as her husband and she soon finds out Aimery is Golden Hart, the rebel as well as the honorable knight of the King.
Lord of My Heart is first published by Avon Romance in August 1992 and has been out of print for a while. With a new publisher and an elegant book cover, this book will surely grace anyone’s bookshelf.
Once again, Ms Beverley proves to be an excellent storyteller and Lord of My Heart is surely one of her best historical novel. A must read no matter you are a fan of historical romance or a new romance lover.
