The cover catches your eye, the silhouette of a nubile woman as seen through a keyhole. The title piques your interest, as you wonder what might be hidden within its pages. The House of Dark Delights beckons. Will you enter?

Author Louisa Burton takes readers on an erotic journey that criss-crosses time as she embarks on a series of books set in France at Chateau de la Grotte Cache. Those who are invited within its walls may find more than a simple rendezvous. The chateau is the home and refuge of people known as follets. They have many names – incubus, succubus, satyr and more.

This story is not a typical romance. The chapters jump in time, offering readers vignettes that have shaped the main characters as the contemporary story unfolds. I did not find this writing device to be distracting at all. Ms. Burton’s skill at weaving together all of the elements into a cohesive whole made the reading flow effortlessly.

The eroticism is what sets this story apart. Readers will be transfixed by the tableaux that she presents, and seduced by the lure of so many forbidden delights. A member of the Hellfire club finds herself in unfamiliar territory as she submits to her dark desires. A young scientist discovers much more than the hidden grotto in the caves. An engaged couple leaves the chateau with a renewed commitment, and more. These stories will fascinate the reader, and whet her appetite for the books to come.
