Lauren Taylor and her young son Nicky live in the small town of Vermillion, Montana. Her husband was killed while fighting a forest fire a few years ago and she’s still trying to get on with her life. She runs supplies and passengers between her town and the mainland and on one such trip delivers a man to Vermillion who says he’s there to hike and enjoy the scenery. After arriving home and seeing a newspaper article about a serial arsonist, accompanied with a picture, Lauren fears she may have just brought him to her home town.

The FBI has been chasing an arsonist they’ve dubbed the Boy Next Door Arsonist for a few years. When a tip comes in that their man may be in Montana, Brad Hale heads there to interview the witness. Spending time with Lauren and her son, Brad finds himself impressed with her determination as well as attracted to her.

The arsonist insinuates himself with Nicky while he surveys the small town and decides where to strike next. In the past he’s always targeted single women, but young Nicky’s mom is tempting as well.

Whether this author is writing about natural disasters or man made ones, she certainly knows how to keep her readers on edge. The first half of the book develops the story, introducing the characters and giving us a glimpse inside the mind of killer. The second half of the book thrusts us into non stop action as the FBI tries to stop a killer, and a mother desperately tries to protect her son. Can’t wait to see what Ms. Harper writes about next!
