The Midwest Plains

March, 1859

Isabelle Caldwell, along with her husband, Jon, and their children are settling in Gillford Township, Minnesota, a beautiful area in the southern part of the state. With them is Isabelle’s sister, Mercy. Their parents perished on their way from Ireland to America. Isabelle is a gifted midwife; she knows her services will be in high demand. They proceed to clear the land and start building their house, barn and other structures. They plan on staying here for the rest of their lives. When their barn burns down, the neighbors come to help them rebuild. One of those neighbors is young Will Owen; he can not seem to keep his eyes off of Mercy.

Mercy has also noticed Will. He seems a bit rugged around the edges, which only makes her want to get to know him even more. Love blossoms between these two people and eventually they marry. They settle not to far from Isabelle and start their new life. They discover they are going to be parents, they are both extremely happy.

There are forces working to drive them apart, which neither one has control over. The Civil War is in force, and Will has a strong sense of duty. He enlists, and convinces Mercy to move back to Isabelle’s while he is gone, for safety. There is danger closer to home for Mercy. Someone wants her as his own, even though he knows she is married and about to give birth. He will stop at nothing to achieve his goal.

Sky Tinted Water is a great book by a gifted author, K. Celeste Bryan. This was more than a love story; this was a family’s struggle to survive in a new land. In the 1800’s you had to be strong, not only in body and mind, but also in spirit and faith. Highly recommended.
