An
Interview
With
Rida Allen

Q. I received your book in the mail yesterday, I just
finished it. It was wonderful! I was wondering are
you going to do a follow up story about Sam's sister
Becki? I for one would really love to see her get
away from that jerk of a stepfather and find her own
worth and a true love of her own.
A. Interestingly enough, a lot of people have
asked about Becki. At this point I don't
think a book centered on Becki is something
I'm going to do... I'm keeping my heroines as
full-figured heroines since that is what I know
best.
Q. What will you be working on next?
A. You can read short (really really short) info on some of my
upcoming work on my new website. I've been considering
doing a continuation of Great Love so that we can follow
Samantha through other parts of her life, including
her new marriage, going back to school and etc. After all,
her world didn't stop because she got married! And through
that I may develop more with Becki.
Q. Although I'd really like to read a good story about
Becki I'm also eagerly awaiting your next full figured
heroine. I'd love to see someone with a lot of
confidence. It would be great to see a woman who's
confident in everything she does and is full figured or
in almost everything she does. Men are always the
exception to a woman's rules.
A. My next full-figured heroines ARE actually more confident
than Sam was. Sam was my entry not only into the romance world,
but also into the plus-size world. My next books don't focus so
much on the heroine being full-figured... there's more
to the stories but the heroines are still described as
full-figured.
Q. How many books have you written?
A. At this point, I have three books completed,
two that are still in the works and one that has
been pounding in my head for months, waiting to
be written.
However, I have lots of stories completed that
right now are not fit for print. There may be a
time when I go back to those "ideas" and really
develop them into full novels.

Q. Do many of them feature full figure heroines?
A. Of the list above, the only ones that do not
feature full figured heroines are the old
"ideas". Once I wrote Great Love and really
focused on full figured heroines, I realized
that the old stories I had were all missing that
one thing... and it was a heroine I really
believed in and identified with. I write so much
more in-depth and more from the heart when it's
a full figured heroine. And that is because it's
the way I live.

Q. How long ago did you submit your first full manuscript
to a publisher?
A. Great Love was originally submitted to a large
romance publisher in the summer of 1998. It took
them almost two years to reject the manuscript,
though I'm not sure if they ever fully read it.
In late May of 2001, I submitted it again to a
publisher who specializes in first time authors.
They accepted it quickly and put it into print
in July of 2001, which is phenomenal. The
publisher is small and offers both print-on-
demand technology as well as traditional
publishing methods, however it is not a vanity
publisher. I was given a very small advance and
then I receive small royalties on each sale of
Great Love.
Q. Are you looking for other publishers? Someone a little
more mainstream?
A. Yes, I'd love to see Great Love go mainstream
and am trying really hard to promote it.
Unfortunately, promotion is basically all up to
me and I've never promoted a book before.

Q. Would you ever consider writing anything other than
romance?
A. Oh yes, I'd love to write in other genres. My
family desperately wants me to write a book
about dogs since I'm an avid dog lover (can you
tell?)... I would also like to co-write a
vampire novel with my husband, who is also a
writer.

Q. Do you read anything other than romance?
A. I do read other genres besides romance, though I
will admit that serial romances are my favorite.
I enjoy vampire books, some other horror books.
suspense and some mysteries. I'm intrigued by a
good story line more than I am a genre (outside
of the romance category).

Q. Are there any authors who have influenced you?
A. When it comes to this question, I think I would
be considered odd. I don't really follow many
authors, but more I follow serials. For example,
I was a faithful reader of Silhouette Intimate
Moments and Special Edition books. I would read
them non-stop if I had the opportunity, and I
think in some ways those books influence my
writings. Beyond that, like music, I more enjoy
the individual songs than I do follow a musical
group itself.

Q. Would you be willing to collaborate with another writer?
A. I think I would enjoy collaborating with my
husband and would definitely consider cowriting
with another author, but I wouldn't have any
idea if I'd enjoy it or be good at it without
having the opportunity to try it.

Q. In your bio you mentioned that you'd like to have a lot
of dogs once you and your husband purchase a house.
There are authors who have animals play very active
rolls in all their work and Molly plays a big role in
Samantha's life, are dogs going to be a staple in your
books?
A. Yes, because I, as well as my entire family,
love dogs, they will be a staple in my books. I
think they are an integral part of life and that
they bring light and joy and unconditional love
to you unlike anything else. I will say that not
all of the dogs will be as integral to the plot
as Molly was, but they will show up at some
point in each book.

Q. Does Samantha have a lot of you in her?

A. Yes, Samantha does have a lot of me in her. My
family tells me that they can see pieces of my
life and experiences woven into Great Love. I
find it so easy to write about things I know and
so I use my life and my experiences to craft my
heroines. No one heroine will be "me", but they
will all have a part of me in them. That's what
makes them realistic and human.

Q. I've always been curious about the an author's family
plays in her career. Your husband is obviously very
supportive, is the rest of your family like that as
well? Do your brothers buy your books? : )

A. My husband is extremely supportive of me, as is
my family. They have all be wonderful in the
past months as I've gone through this new part
of my life with Great Love. My brothers have
purchased my book, though one says he won't read
it due to the fact that he wants to remain
ignorant of my love life experience, even though
I've been married for two years. :) My brothers
and I all live within thirty minutes of our
parents and we enjoy spending time with them. I
feel very lucky to have such great support in my
life

Q. My Brother's Wife is being done in installments on The
Venus Divas at www.venusimaging.com How many
installments are there and is there anyway to get the
full story all at one time?
A. I can't even tell you yet how many installments
are going to be available at the
VenusImaging.com website. To be honest, I
haven't actually completed My Brother's Wife yet
(it's one of the two incomplete books I'm
working on). This is the first time I've written
a serial for a website, and the first time
VenusImaging has offered one, so we're still
working out the details of how many... but the
installments are supposed to be posted twice a
month. If you're just dying to know what happens
with Andi, Lee and Rick... good! Keep
reading. :) I hope to have My Brother's Wife
published at some point, but can't say when just
yet.

Q. What you're doing for full figured women is incredible.
You mentioned that it was a TV movie that made you see
what was missing from your work. Before that were full
figured woman involved in your novels at all? As
support characters?
A. Before the tv movie, I didn't realize what had
been missing in my books. I've been reading the
same two Silhouette series since I was about 12
years old so they were like a habit to me. I was
always overweight as a child, as a teen, as an
adult... now I think I read those romance novels
so passionately because I didn't think I
deserved to be loved or romanced. When I met my
husband and found myself in such an amazing
relationship, I realized that it was possible
for people of all sizes to be loved and
romanced. When I finished writing Great Love and
read it for myself, I realized what was missing
in all those romances... the ability to identify
with a real heroine.
Q. Would the book with your husband be a vampire romance
or straight up horror?

A. I think it would be both... I think between the
two of us, we could come up with a winning
combination. I have a couple of ideas, but we
haven't pursued them as of yet. I'm currently
pretty engrossed in the romance genre and he's
smack dab in the middle of several of his own
projects.

Q. What kind of books does your husband write?
Has he been published?

A. My husband says he writes fantasy, sci-fi and
horror for the adventure gaming industry. :)He
has an adventure coming out very soon and is
currently working on his first solo game! In
addition, he writes articles in the same
industry for some industry magazines.
Q. Do you rememebr the title of the TV Movie?
A. It was called Chance of a Lifetime and it
starred John Ritter and Katey Sagal. It was a
fun romantic comedy and I enjoyed the
performances by both John and Katey. I wish I
could thank whoever wrote it for doing it and
getting it onto televsion... unfortunately I
have no idea who wrote it. ;-)

Q. Have you seen anything or read anything since then with
a similar story line?
A. Unfortunately, no. Most of the movies that come
out today that have full-figured women show the
women as unhappy and unsuccessful in romance
when they are heavy. At some point in the movie,
the women lose weight and "suddenly" find love!
What a crock... women of all sizes can have love
and romance!
