Romance readers, it's almost Mothers Day! And what exactly do you plan to give the one person in your life who is always there no matter what the crisis? The woman who wiped your tears, kissed away your sorrow, and is a darn good babysitter!
Maybe a new bathrobe or a blender will tell her just how much she means to you? Wait, I know! Why don't you grab her one of those gadgets from an infomercial! You know, the ones that keep you up late at night, mesmerized, and then have you reaching for the phone to play 'fast fingers' dialing up an order. A vacuum cleaner that does everything but cook dinner for her, or a set of pots and pans that also cleans the bathroom while it lulls you into peaceful dreams with a bedtime story!
Hmm…maybe not. Like most moms (or this mom anyway) I feel certain her eyes won't tear up with joy, when she rips open a package with the George Foreman Grill inside!
If you're scrambling around for that perfect gift - fear not, maybe some of our reviewers can help. We here at ARR know the business of romance, and set about digging deep into our TBR piles, as well as our hearts to choose what we feel is a surefire way to mom's heart. What else of course, but a romance novel!
For the mom who likes a little variety, our reviewer Sandi decided on Harlequin romances, any Harlequin, in any of their many categories. Harlequin not only offers different settings and plots, but Sandi claims they are quick easy reads that you can pack up and take with you anywhere! Sandi did note the advantage to giving her mother said Harlequins; seems Sandi's mom will send them off to her when she's finished! Not only a lovely, gift but it has a dual purpose. Did we mention our reviewers are also a pretty smart bunch?
A general consensus round these parts is the wildly popular Nora Roberts. Our reviewers Roni and Paula adore Nora's books; eat them up like candy in fact. Nora Roberts is also known as JD Robb, who writes an ongoing series about a hardcore police detective, Eve Dallas. In this futuristic setting Eve solves case after case, while she plays hard and fast with her romantic interest, Roarke. Playing hard and fast might be just what mom needs to woo her away from planning that next family picnic!
JaToya, our Publishing Liaison who really knows her books, says her mom would enjoy anthologies. A compilation of stories that she can get a quick romance fix from, enabling her to lead her busy life then pick up the book where she left off and move onto a new adventure. If mom's life is filled with trips to the grocery store and the soccer field, then an anthology is a guaranteed hit!
This reviewer knows her mom well, and my mother (being the wacky free spirited soul she is) would love anything by Sandra Hill. Sandra whisks you off to places you can't go if you don't read about them. Ms. Hill's side-splitting humor is perfect for the mom who likes her romance less traditional, and filled with zany antics!
Pam loves anything by Kathie DeNosky, Lucy loves Candace Camp and Mary says medical romances make her mom smile. So many choices, so little space left on your TBR shelf… for mom's castaways that is!
Our Features Editor despaired of getting her mom to read anything, since she was always out digging in the garden and growing her roses. But recently, she picked up a Danielle Steel book, which makes Celia consider a Rosamund Pilcher novel as a good mother's day gift. Perhaps "The Carousel", because it is set near mom's childhood home. Gentle romances with a happy ending are just the ticket for this mom.
There are too many authors to mention in just one short column. My suggestion to you, if you're looking for that perfect book for mom to read when she's cuddled up in that new bathrobe you bought her is to take a peek at our reviews. If something doesn't grab your fancy there, take a look at the list we've provided below. These books are suggested reads specifically with mothers in mind, and in the title. They are books that involve moms in general, single and otherwise, finding love in some unusual places. This year treat mom to an all inclusive get away package filled with love, laughter, travel and some hot romance, with a very sexy hunk! Light on the pocket and even easier the eye. Oh and this reviewer's advice? Borrow them when she's finished!
